SportsPro NEW ERA: Our Impact to Date

The Health and Wellbeing Centre for Research Innovation at The University of Queensland

August 2025

Gender parity remains a concern across all aspects of sport, where women continue to be severely under-represented in both professional competition and the business and leadership functions that shape the industry. Despite some progress, significant gaps persist in opportunities and representation at all levels. In light of that challenge, women’s leadership programmes, such as SportsPro’s New Era initiative, have emerged to create pathways and foster inclusion for aspiring female leaders.

A new in-depth report from The University of Queensland presents key findings following an in-depth evaluation of the NEW ERA, SportsPro’s global leadership initiative launched in 2022 to advance gender equity and representation in sport.

Drawing on interviews with the most recent cohort, Steering Group members and alumni, the study examined participant experiences, skill development, mentoring outcomes, and the broader impact of NEW ERA on the sports sector.

Key Findings

Participants consistently described NEW ERA as a timely, high-impact, and an inspirational programme. Its adaptability, responsiveness to feedback, and integration of diverse opportunities – such as dedicated NEW ERA Connect sessions, event access, and writing and speaking engagements across SportsPro’s wider portfolio of platforms and conferences – were viewed as core strengths.

Everyone involved in the programme expressed pride in being a part of the NEW ERA community, and gratitude for its uniqueness and quality. Alumni and current class members appreciated the wide spectrum of opportunities within NEW ERA, particularly through speaking, writing, and panel participation, which many credited with boosting their confidence and professional visibility.

The programme team was praised for professionalism and commitment. Participants identified some areas for improvement or development including clearer communication, mentor support, and structured preparation for public speaking roles.

The mentoring model, centred on access to three senior leaders, provides valuable perspectives and strong advocacy. Alumni and current cohort described members of the Steering Group as role models, cheerleaders and advocates, offering practical strategies, encouragement, and validation of women’s place in sport.

Most mentors had more than 16 years of leadership experience in sport, with two reporting 11–15 years, and one as 6-10.

Diverse mentoring styles and approaches broadened learning, while the quality of mentor relationships was highlighted as critical to impact. Challenges included scheduling across time zones, variable mentor engagement, and uncertainty around session expectations. Steering Group members emphasised mentoring as reciprocal, with many learning from mentees while also reflecting on their own leadership.

Participants consistently reported growth in confidence, empowerment, and leadership identity. Alumni and current cohort reported developing clearer personal values and goals, and gaining tools to communicate, influence, and assert authority.

Public speaking and professional visibility opportunities were particularly empowering, while exposure to global peers expanded perspectives and reinforced solidarity in navigating systemic barriers. Career outcomes included promotions, new roles, and expanded professional networks.

NEW ERA also fostered community and safe spaces, enabling candid discussion of challenges such as family-work transitions and gendered barriers in sport. Participants valued the sense of belonging, peer solidarity, and advocacy-driven culture that validated women’s leadership and encouraged systemic change.

The programme was widely credited with catalysing a “see it, be it” effect, inspiring participants to advocate for others, influence organisational practices, and contribute to sector-wide equity efforts.
